Arup is a global company doing all things built environment — from planning to engineering to acoustics. Through the Arup University, the firm explores current issues and conducts research into new ideas and solutions.

What happens to this in-depth research? One output is the Research Review. To share the learnings, the Arup University team need to distill the key ideas, questions and findings.

And this is where I come in. After reviewing the research reports and collateral, I chat with the researchers about what most excites them and how they’d like to see the research develop. I then get writing and turn the reports into summary articles.

It’s a real pleasure doing this work. The range of topics is inspiring, as are the people who champion them. As a speculative fiction writer, the research projects keep me aware of potential and practical solutions to the various challenges we face.
